If ou have recently purchased or are thinking about getting hold of an Apple iPhone, then you may be thinking what applications can I use and how would this help me on the move?

Below are Limephusion's top application choices for use with the iPhone, some of which can also be used for the iPod Touch. All applications are available from the iTunes Apps Store via your PC, MAC or iPhone itself. Limephusion has chosen a mixture of free and paid for apps of which are highlighted in the following sections.

Productivity

Evernote is a fantastic application that allows you to capture and sync notes, web clippings, create voice notes, business card information, photo snapshots. Just about anything you may need to capture when on the move. Evernote also provides recognition technology so you can quickly perform searches of your clippings and notes. The great thing about this app is that it’s cross-platform, and can be used on other mobile devices, your PC or Mac. Client software is available for these platforms and is free, providing you don’t use more than the 40Mb of allocated usage for your clippings per month.

Evernote can be found at the Apps Store here (Free)

Travel & Navigation

There are a number of apps available for when you are out and about. The built-in Google Maps using the iPhone’s GPS is great, but how do you get there with public transport? Two apps that are very useful are Trains, and London Tube.

Trains will provide you with up-to-date information on the status of your train and show you the route, stopping stations, expected arrival times and even the departing platforms for larger stations.

London Tube, is a graphical interactive map of the London Underground system, which allows you to plan your route and shows you departure and arrival times for your journey.

Finally, AroundMe is a great application that lets you know the closest Bars, Restaurants, Coffee Shops, Hotels, Parking, just about anything that’s around you. It uses your current location via GPS, WiFi or Mobile Signal to inform you of what is about, very useful if you’re new to the place you’re visiting.

London Tube by Visual IT Ltd can be found at the Apps Store here (£5.99)

Expense Tracking

iXpenseIt is an expense tracker that allows you to track all your business and personal expenses. You can create any number of categories for your expenses, track mileage, and it can take a photo of your receipts for archiving. It also has the ability to chart your finances and export the data to .csv, HTML or email for external processing.

News & Information

For up-to-date news and information from your favourite RSS feeds, use the Web Feeds application. This is a very useful RSS reader that allows you to add your favourite sites, like BBC News, or Limephusion's Podcasts for example, and provides a neat and concise interface. It also lets you open up the full story with it’s built in web browser. Very useful.

Communication

Three apps stand out for us here for use with Instant Messaging, Communication and Social Networking.

BeejiveIM is an integrated Instant Messaging (IM) client that allows you to communicate with your co-workers and friends using a variety of the well-known IM clients such as AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk and MSN Messenger.

Fring integrates with your Skype account (plus others) and allows you to make free Skype-Skype calls over the WiFI network. Great for when you are in a WiFi hotspot such as The Cloud and want to make free calls on your iPhone.

Facebook integrates with the Web version of this application. You can update your status, read news feeds, add friends and let people know where you are with a simple and easy to use interface.

BeejiveIM by Beejive Inc. can be found at the Apps Store here (£9.49)

As you can see there are a lot of great applications available for the iPhone, and iPod Touch, both free and paid, too many to list here. We hope this brief list provides you with some useful application that will help you when you’re out and about.
